Overview

What is NFEC 5.0?

The National Fire Extinguisher Control (NFEC) 5.0 program creates a national framework where every fire extinguisher is digitally registered, verified and maintained using a unique Fire Extinguisher Identity (FEID). It addresses fake products, poor servicing and lack of traceability that put lives and assets at risk.

The Challenge

Before NFEC, many extinguishers were:

  • Fake, expired or recycled and painted as new
  • Unserviced and unreliable during emergencies
  • Used for illegal activities, including contraband concealment

The Solution

FEIMS assigns each extinguisher a unique digital identity (FEID), links it to its owner and service history, and enables quick verification via QR code.

Public Benefit

Citizens, businesses and government gain confidence that extinguishers in use are genuine, correctly serviced and ready for real emergencies.

Process

How NFEC Works

NFEC 5.0 combines national policy, controlled FEID distribution, practical training and a digital registry to protect the public and support internal security.

1. FEID Distributors Appointed

Federal Fire Service and State Fire Service Welfare/Cooperatives are appointed as FEID Distributors, responsible for receiving and managing NFEC stickers within their jurisdictions.

2. FEID Sticker Procurement & Resale

FEID distributors obtain stickers at official cost and resell them to:

  • Certified servicing vendors
  • Fire safety companies
  • DCP packaging and refill ventures

3. Strategic Vendor Deployment

Vendors are deployed to markets, filling stations, estates, offices, motor parks and high-risk locations to offer NFEC-compliant services and support.

4. Free Public Training

The public is taught how to use fire extinguishers correctly. Citizens practice using their existing extinguisher in a safe, supervised demonstration.

5. Refill & Digital Activation

After training, the vendor refills and recharges the cylinder, attaches the NFEC FEID sticker, and activates it with the owner’s details in the FEIMS database.

6. Provision for Those Without Extinguishers

If a citizen or organization does not own an extinguisher, the vendor supplies an NFEC-approved unit, applies a FEID and registers it in the system.

7. Manufacturer & Importer Compliance

All manufacturers and importers must register via the Federal Fire Service website and obtain NFEC manufacturing codes and FEID allocations for their products.

8. Multi-Agency Data Access

Through secure APIs, authorized agencies such as Customs, Police, NDLEA, FRSC, NSCDC, VIO, ONSA and the Nigerian Army can access NFEC data for compliance and security purposes.

Rollout

NFEC Deployment Plan

NFEC is being implemented in two major phases: Phase 1 (Construction & System Readiness) and Phase 2 (National Operational Rollout).

Phase 1 – Construction & System Readiness

  • PPP award and agreement – achieved
  • Stakeholder notifications – completed
  • System design, development, testing and hosting – completed
  • Database validation with pilot groups (e.g. MATAN, Benue, HATOMSA)
  • National stakeholder buy-in (Governors, NPF, FRSC, NSCDC, NEMA)
  • NFDRC software and mobile app upgrades – completed
  • Headquarters and State Project Delivery Teams – in place
  • APIs for NDLEA, ONSA, FRSC and others – developed

Phase 1 Status

Component Status
Approvals & Documentation Complete
Software Infrastructure Complete
Database Testing Complete
Stakeholder Buy-In Secured
API Development Activated
PDT Structure Implemented

Phase 2 – National Operational Rollout will focus on mass vendor onboarding, state command activation, public awareness campaigns and continuous monitoring.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is NFEC a government initiative?
Yes. NFEC is a national fire safety and compliance initiative under the Federal Fire Service and Ministry of Interior, implemented in partnership with accredited private sector operators.
Do I pay extra to scan or verify my extinguisher?
No. Basic verification is a public safety service. You may pay for the extinguisher itself and any professional servicing, but verifying a FEID is not an extra hidden charge.
Can old or existing extinguishers be registered?
Yes, but they must be inspected by an NFEC-recognized vendor. If the cylinder passes safety checks, it can be serviced, refilled and activated with a FEID.
How do I report suspicious or fake extinguishers?
You can report through the NFEC support lines, your nearest Fire Service office, or through NFEC-linked digital channels when available.
